Project Management: Lean Software Development

Overview

Lean is a production methodology intended to minimise waste and optimise efficiency, from conceptualisation to product delivery. Originally pioneered by Toyota in manufacturing, Lean principles have been adapted to software development as Lean Software Development (short: LSD).

Principles

At the core of Lean are 7 tenets:

  • Eliminate waste: Focus only on activities that add real value for the customer, avoiding unnecessary work.
  • Embrace continuous learning: Encourage experimentation, feedback, and adaptation to solve challenges effectively.
  • Take decisions as late as possible: Evaluate different options, delay irreversible decisions until they can be made based on concrete facts.
  • Deliver fast: Provide value to the customer as soon as they ask for it.
  • Empower the team: Trust and enable the people creating value to make decisions and optimize their work.
  • Embed integrity: Ensure quality, security, and maintainability from the start rather than as an afterthought.
  • Optimise the whole: Beware of the temptation to optimise parts at the expense of the whole.

By applying these principles, Lean Software Development fosters agility, reduces inefficiencies, and delivers high-value software that meets customer needs effectively.
